Jane Andrewartha
Jane Andrewartha is a dance educator with over forty years’ experience working with students of all ages and dance teachers.
Her approach and praxis have been deeply influenced by her training and subsequent work with Laurel Martyn OBE, a major figure in the development of performance, choreography and dance training in Australia. While Jane’s love of dance had resulted in a sound training to advanced level and an initial experience of teaching, it was the generosity of Laurel’s training, and subsequently working closely with her for over ten years, that fostered her passion for improved dance teaching standards for young bodies and minds.
She now continues this work through the Laurel Martyn Dance System (LMDS), as a senior teacher and assessor for young dancers, and in the delivery of dance teacher training courses and registration as Executive Director of Movement and Dance Education Centre.
The ground-breaking two-year full-time Diploma course in Dance Teaching and Management was piloted by Laurel Marytn at Box Hill Institute in 1989. After completing this course, Jane was a sessional lecture for fifteen years at BHI. She has also developed training and assessment resources for two other organisations providing accredited dance teaching qualifications.
Safe dance teaching practices are fundamental to all of these courses, and have always been integrated into Jane’s teaching. She takes every opportunity to keep abreast of current developments in this field, successfully participating in a range of certificate courses, short courses and workshops on related topics, including the Certificate in Safe and Effective Dance Practices in 2012 and most recently, the Essentials of Performing Arts Medicine course through Performing Arts Medicine Association.
She strongly believes that there must be a greater focus placed on improved teaching and safe dance in the early years of training, and since 2012 has presented a range of sessions related to this at international conferences held by Association for Dance Medicine and Science (IADMS), Dance and the Child International (daCi) and RAD in Australia.
Through networking at such conferences, Jane has been delighted to meet several of the SiDI team members, and to discover that the work of SiDI and MDEC are fundamentally in agreement and mutually supportive. She delivered a pilot Safe Dance Practice course in January 2020 in Melbourne Australia to facilitate the achievement of the SiDI Healthy Dance Practice Certificate and is keen to share this with more dance teachers in Australia and further afield through the MDEC network.
