The Certificate in Healthy Dance Practice (HDPC)

The Healthy Dance Practice Certificate (HDPC) is designed for teaching, leading or directing dancers in any setting and in any style. This Certificate asks you to provide evidence of your knowledge and practical application of the SiDI Core Principles to your teaching practice. This is done by submitting a variety of materials for review – further detailed guidance on how to complete the HDPC is available in the Candidate pack provided on registration. By attaining this Certificate you will evidence your understanding of the inter-related factors that contribute to and enhance healthy dance practice and support the physical and mental wellbeing of participants.

The HDPC covers SiDI’s 10 core principles of Healthy Dance Practice including how body works biomechanically to promote good alignment, how good injury awareness and management can protect dancers, why proper nutrition and hydration is important to maintain dancers’ health and performance while they dance and why psychological elements should be taken into consideration to ensure a safe and effective learning environment. While these are all essential to providing a positive dance experience, it is vital that they are applied with the specific participant group’s needs, abilities and desired outcomes in mind. Your submitted materials will demonstrate both your knowledge and application of all of the Core Principles, with direct attention paid to your specific dancers and stylistic context.

    In awarding the HDPC Certificate, SiDI provides international professional endorsement of a dance teacher or practitioner’s knowledge and practical application of these principles.

    Those teaching or leading dance sessions in any genre and with dancers of any age or ability level, will evidence their efforts to minimise injury and optimise performance within their own practice or educational environment.

    Please note that in order to attain the Healthy Dance Practice Certificate you must be teaching dance to students or professionals – of any age, ability and genre.

    The HDPC awards 60 hours of Continuing Professional Development that can be undertaken through self-study without the need to attend a course.

    Study materials and references are included in the registration pack. Please note this is not a course.


Healthy Dancer Certificate (HDC)

The Healthy Dancer Certificate allows individual dancers, working in any genre or style to show how their own practice is informed by healthy dance principles. It focusses on the individual dancer, in training or as a professional, maintain their unique dancing body in order to optimise performance and minimise the risk of injury.

This Certificate asks you to provide evidence of your understanding of the SiDI Core Principles, in relation to you as a dancer by submitting a variety of materials for review – further detailed guidance on how to complete the HDC is available in the Candidate pack provided on registration.  Working towards this Certificate will improve your understanding of the inter-related factors that contribute to and enhance your physical and mental wellbeing to safeguard and protect your own body while participating in dance activities.

The Certificate in Preparation for Healthy Dance (PHDC)

Dancers perform, rehearse and learn to dance in all kinds of spaces, inside and outside. It is essential that dancers and those leading dance know how to address any risk factors that they come across within their own dancing environment. It is also important that you understand what optimum conditions are and why it is important to strive for these.

The assessment for this Certificate asks you to answer questions on the ideal dance environment and how to mediate negative effects of less than optimum conditions.

The Certificate requires you to demonstrate that you are aware of the fundamental factors that support safety and wellbeing when preparing to dance in any environment, indoors or outdoors, in a theatre, rehearsal space or studio. In order to achieve the Certificate you will need to show knowledge on topics such as space size, appropriate flooring and preferred temperature. Information on country-specific legal requirements, fire regulations and an understanding of assessing risks, safeguarding dancers and relevant insurance is also required.

    This certificate offers 6 hours of endorsed continuing professional development.

    The Preparation for Healthy Dance Certificate deals with preliminary Dance Health and Safety (SiDI’s Core Principle 1). It represents Section One of the full Certificates. Working towards this Certificate will improve your understanding of how to protect yourself and your dancers in the environment in which you practice.

    This certificate is a precursor to our other two certificates, the Healthy Dancer and the Healthy Dance Practice Certificates (HDC or HDPC)

    This certificate is the online assessment related to the e-learning programme Preparing for Safer Dance Practice.  It is NOT a course.


Preparing for Safer Dance Practice e-learning programme

This four-unit online programme, developed by Safe in Dance International (SiDI) and People Dancing provides any dance practitioner – teacher, leader, director or dancer – with the knowledge needed to integrate and manage safe and healthy practice principles into all dance learning or working environments. Applicable to all dance styles it can also be used in relation to any context, whether working with children or adults, beginners or professionals.

This course contains all the content needed to undertake the Preparation for Healthy Dance Certificate, plus an introduction to other relevant SiDI Core Principles, such as warm up and cool down and working with dancers’ individual anomalies. It also awards 4 hours of Continuing Professional Development.
