The Safe in Dance International team are delighted to have been invited to develop and present a workshop at the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science (IADMS) Annual Conference which will be held in Melbourne Australia this year.

Overview

Dance teachers are facing increasing expectations that can extend far beyond technique and performance.  Important areas such as mental wellbeing, identity, social and cultural experiences are factors that need to be taken into consideration in the studio and can have an influence in how dance is taught, experienced, performed and enjoyed.

Following our Stirring the Pot event at the IADMS Meeting in Limerick in 2022, Safe in Dance International (SiDI) is presenting another interactive workshop.  The workshop will combine provocations, panel discussion and audience participation to provide insights into the topics, inspire reflection and investigate practical strategies for change. The SiDI team will be joined by leading dancer educators and practitioners from Australia and around the world, to explore these issues together with the participants.  It aims to support dancers, dance teachers and leaders and give them an opportunity to discuss their challenges with industry experts and fellow practitioners in the field. 

Together we will explore how to: 

  • Create psychological and emotional supportive learning environments
  • Respect diverse social and cultural contexts
  • Promote equitable and healthy dance practice
  • Understand the lived experiences of neurodiversity in dance practice.
