Just over 10 years ago, at midnight on New Year’s Eve, Matthew pressed the ‘live’ button on our website and we raised a glass to toast the launch of Safe in Dance International.
Ten years later and we are just about to press the launch button on our new website and so much more. Welcome to our latest newsletter, giving you a glimpse of what we have in store over the next weeks, months and year.
IADMS Conference, Rimini, Italy
“Safe Dance Practice: Celebrating the past and shaping the future”
To mark our anniversary, we are holding a special event at the IADMS Annual Conference in Rimini, Italy this October. It is an interactive event where we will be looking at safe dance practice development over the past decade and how we mov forward in the future. An expert panel discussion, followed by a session with the attendees, will explore what has changed over the past years in our communities and how the changing influences of society and culture have impacted dance.
We are very honoured to be joined by our international panel at the conference, who will share their expertise and experience:
Joe Bowie MFA: Previously a professional dancer, Joe is now visiting Assistant Professor in the Theatre Department Northwestern University, the current Co-Chair of the IADMS Educators’ Committee and an engaged member of the IADMS Intersectionality Task Force.
Zahra Carpenter MSc: Adjunct faculty George Mason University, Zahra is a dance educator advocating for safe dance environment guidelines, onsite for local dance healing practitioners and acceptance for many minority dancers. She is on the board of IADMS and serves on the Safe Dance task force, Dance for Health Champions and the Intersectionality task force.
Erin Sanchez MSc: Head of the National Institute of Dance Medicine and Science. One Dance UK’s lead specialist in Health, Wellbeing and Performance. She is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Edinburgh investigating dance talent development, psychological skills, dancers’ mental health and safeguarding in dance settings.
Professor Matt Wyon: Faculty of Education, Health and Wellbeing at Wolverhampton University. Matt has been at the forefront of dance medicine and science research for the last 30 years with over 150 peer-reviewed papers focused on reducing injury incidence and enhancing performance in vocational and professional dancers. He is a past president of IADMS and is currently Chair of the Professional Development Committee.
The event will conclude with SiDI’s introduction of our updated Core Principles of healthy dance practice, explaining why we have made the changes in response to the important areas of safe practice that have come more to the fore in recent times.
Join us online or in person at IADMS International Conference Rimini Italy. www.iadms.org on Saturday 19th October 2024, 6.15pm.
We would like to thank IADMS for their continued partnership with SiDI.
New Awards
Watch this space for the launch of our new Certificates over the coming year. Responding to requests from the sector, SiDI are launching new awards which will cover groups of our Core Principles, organised into modules. These include physiological, psychological and social aspects of healthy dance practice and, most importantly, their application to practice. The awards will be available to all practitioners, whether teaching practical dance sessions and providing education or delivering these principles as Physical Therapists. We are also rolling out our Course Provider status to all, not just those who teach or deliver dance in a practical context.

Reconvening and expanding our International Advisory Group
We have recently met with our International Advisory Group, which includes colleagues who have been with SiDI before and during our journey as well as new members who are sharing their expertise and experience with us. We will share more on this and the work that we are doing in a follow-up newsletter later in the year.
